Cumbrian Georgia Stanway fired England into the semi-final of the Women’s Euros with a stunning finish against Spain.
Her superb strike in the first period of extra-time turned things round after England had been behind until the 84th minute of a gripping quarter-final at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.
The Barrow-born forward picked the ball up 40 yards out, drove forward and then on the run thumped a great shot past the Spanish keeper.
Spain had been the better side in the first half of the game but couldn’t find a way through a stubborn England defence.
The pre-tournament favourites broke the deadlock on 54 minutes when Esther Gonzales took a clever pull-back from the lively Athenea del Castillo and drilled her shot beyond the diving Mary Earps.
Spain looked to be in control but a raft of substitutions by Sarina Weigman enabled England to turn the tide.
The grabbed the equaliser on 84 minutes was a cross was headed down by Alessia Russo and her Man Utd team-mate Ella Toone beat two defenders to drill home from close range.
That took the tie to extra-time and on 95 minutes Stanway produced her magic to send the sell-out Brighton crowd into raptures.
The final is at Wembley on Sunday July 31 but before then England will have to account for either Sweden or Belgium in the semi-final.
