Hundreds of people joined a walk in Keswick to pay tribute to Max the Miracle Dog.
The Brew for Moo event, which raised more than £19,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service, marks what would have been Max’s 15th birthday on August 12 and was attended by his owner Kerry Irving.
Kerry credited Max with helping him overcome depression after a car accident in 2006. The dog became an international star after his adventures were posted on social media, and his story told in a bestselling book.
He supported more than 10,000 people through meet-and-greets, charity walks, appearances and school visits in his fundraising efforts. He was awarded the animal equivalent of an OBE and raised more than £370,000 for charities and supported people through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Max died in April, sparking grief across the globe.
After the Great North Air Ambulance landed specially near Burns Farm campsite, in Saint John’s-in-the-Vale, at the start of the walk today, August 13, Kerry said: “I just want to thank these guys for doing what they do. We see this helicopter just about every day, twice a day, three times a day. When I hear that helicopter coming, I am proud that we are supporting it. And that’s why we’re here today, for that helicopter. ”
At the event Kerry also introduced Max’s fans to the 20-week-old pups from his two other dogs, Paddy and Harry.
The Brew for Moo walkers – all wearing orange, the colour of Max’s collar – then headed on to Tewet Tarn, one of Maxi-moo’s favourite locations.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) rescues hundreds of severely injured or ill patients every year throughout the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. Its doctor-led critical care teams deliver life-saving treatments at the scene of the incident whether that is on a fell top, a roadside or in a city centre.
The charity responded to 1,640 callouts last year alone, via its helicopter and emergency response vehicles, where they performed treatments and procedures which can mean the difference between life or death.
