Lake District bad parking prompts double yellow lines

Double yellow lines are being painted on a Borrowdale road in time for the bank holiday.

Cumbria County Council said it has begun the work on the B5289, as a result of persistent and problematic obstructive parking that poses a safety hazard for emergency vehicles.

The work began at 8pm last night until 6am this morning and is expected to continue tonight. There is a full road closure to minimise disruption.  A diversion is in place around the west side of the lake.

There will be double yellow lines installed on both sides of the carriageway for about 1.5km. Immediately after the junction with the B5289, a short section of double yellow lines will be added to the U2222 Watendlath Road.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “First and foremost, we must ensure that our road network is safe, reliable, and accessible to locals, tourists and emergency services.

“Borrowdale has several parking issues, especially during the tourist season, that need to be addressed.

“As a community, we all have a responsibility to keep our roads and footpaths safe. We hope that installing these double yellow lines, will help to keep Borrowdale’s roads safe for all its users.

“We thank residents, tourists, and businesses for their continued support of these plans, and we welcome all visitors to this part of the Lake District but ask that everyone parks responsibly.”
