Workington were beaten 64-18 in their game at second-placed Featherstone Rovers but there was some consolation in scoring three tries against the Championship high-flyers.
It was also a special moment for amateur Dan Kirkup, who has been playing as a trialist and he got himself on the scoresheet. On Saturday he is likely to be lining up for Silloth rugby union club.
Town’s best performance of the season had been in the home game with Rovers and although beaten 26-10 had given their visitors a stern test.
Since then Town have only won the one game and will be playing League One rugby again next season.
With a reduced squad it was always going to be tough for coach Chris Thorman’s team against opposition who have been the only serious challengers to table-toppers Leigh Centurions.
Congratulations to @10_joekirkup who scored his first try for the club at Fev yesterday. ????⚪️ #offthenudey

It had been 36-6 at half-time with Jamie Doran scoring the Town try after they had trailed 24-0. Carl Forber landed the first of his three conversions.
Kirkup went in for the second and Forber’s goal made it 42-12. The third try was scored by Marcus O’Brien, converted by Forber, to make it 48-18 before Rovers pulled clear.
The home side finished with 11 tries of which hooker Connor Jones scored five. He confirmed afterwards that he was signing again for next season. Craig Hall converted 10.
Town play their final home game on Sunday against local rivals Whitehaven and complete their programme at York a week later.
