Chris Thorman is to leave Workington Town after Sunday’s final game of the season at York City Knights.
Thorman, 41, had led Town to promotion from League One last season but has found life much tougher in the Championship and the Derwent Park side has only won one League game this season.
It is understood that Thorman told the club, staff and players on Sunday that he was leaving and subsequently the Workington directors have put out a short statement.
They said: “Head coach Chris Thorman has taken the decision to accept an opportunity at another club and will leave us at the end of the season.
“We’d like to put on record our sincere thanks to Chris for his time at Town and wish him all the very best for the future.
“Further details to follow as Chris and the club’s focus is on our final game of the season away at York.”
Although Town have not named the club Thorman is joining it is widely believed to be Newcastle Thunder, members of the Championship who have just announced they are going part-time next season.
Thorman, who hails from Wallsend, would seem a perfect fit for Thunder after a distinguished playing career with Sheffield, Huddersfield, London Broncos, Hull and York, and a short spell in Australia with Parramatta.
He coached at Huddersfield Giants until accepting the Workington job in 2019 and in April last year signed a deal which would keep him at Derwent Park until the end of 2024.
During the recent financial struggles for Town Thorman took a significant pay cut as the club made savings across the board with players and other staff members.
