Whitehaven will make a bit of history on Sunday when two of the teams from the Playground club will contest the famous Burton Cup.
The Burton Cup was the major knock-out competition in the old Cumberland Senior League which now operates with lesser numbers as the West Cumbria League.
It will be the first time that two teams from the same club have met in the final as Whitehaven Thirds get to lock horns with Whitehaven Fourths.
Whitehaven thirds will be looking to go one better than last year when they lost in the final to Workington thirds.
In their semi-final Whitehaven thirds took on their Cockermouth counterparts with the Sandair side batting first and dismissed for 60.
Cockermouth skipper Phil Knight top-scored with 22 while for Whitehaven Luke Blaney claimed 3-12, Will Crookhall had 3-2 and Sam Garroway took 2-6.
In reply Whitehaven’s top order collapsed to 12-5 as Knight bowled superbly to take 3-4. However big-hitting Jamie Lofthouse (25no) and Crookhall (19no) saw the Copeland side home by five wickets.
The other semi-final saw a strong Egremont third team bat first and reach 88-8 against Whitehaven 4ths.
Lewis Gribbin (28) and Lee Cruden (19) top-scored for the Gillfoot side while Lewis King (3-11) and 14-year-old Maddie Wood (2-14) were the leading Whitehaven bowlers.
Haven reached their target with the first ball of the final over as Shane Tyson struck the winning boundary but the side had struggled mid-innings.
It took a quickfire 30 not out from Jason Spires, well supported by young Maddie Wood (17) to give Haven the impetus to get over the line with four wickets to spare.
Although the Playground would seem a natural setting for Sunday’s final, the venue has still to be announced.
