Former Carlisle nightclub could be yours for £175,000

A former Carlisle nightclub is set to go under the hammer this month.

Part of the West Walls building, which was home to nightspots Club XS, Legends and the Twisted Wheel, is one of the lots in an online auction on September 20, run by Pugh.

The 16,800 sq ft Grade I listed building, over four levels, has its front wall built on top of Carlisle’s west city walls.

It opened in 1970 as the Pink Panther, the nightclub was renamed as the Twisted Wheel four years later, and was one of the longest running rock, metal and indie venues in Carlisle. Noughties favourite Club XS opened on the West Walls in 2002 and closed in 2008, along with the Twisted Wheel.

The property has planning consent for four retail units and two self-contained flats on two of the levels with the remaining two floors as a nightclub. Work has started on the development, but the majority of the conversion works remains to be completed.

Paul Parker, of auctioneer Pugh, said: “This building is a great investment opportunity with the necessary permissions already in place for an exciting mixed-use development.

“The redevelopment could even see a nightclub return to the West Walls of Carlisle, a lively part of the city with a theatre right next door. While work has already started on the building, there is scope for an imaginative developer to put their stamp on this project to complete the works.

Bidding opens on September 20.
