Hard on the appointment of Anthony Murray as their new coach, Workington Town have announced their first re-signing ahead of the 2023 season.
Talented hooker Matty Henson has committed to another season at Derwent Park after establishing himself over the last two seasons.
Indeed, during a bitterly disappointing and exceedingly tough 2022 back in the Championship, Henson was one of the players to come through it with his reputation enhanced.
Henson, who will be 28 next month, had played for Cockermouth early in his career, had been with National Conference League side Egremont Rangers when he signed for Town in November 2020.
He had come through the RFL player pathway for the most talented players in the country, He played for the England Lions from under-17 level and captained England Lions at under-18 and under-21 level.
He then represented the England Lions at open age on their tour of Fiji in 2018.
When joining Town he’d played for Egremont for seven seasons and, after gaining so many representative honours for his country, felt the time was right to take the next step in his career.
He scored two tries on his Town debut against Hunslet in 2021 and has gone on to play in 37 games, notching 15 tries.
New coach Murray has been working alongside director of rugby Gary Murdock identifying new talent in the community game for Town to sign.
If they can recruit players with the same commitment and ability as Henson they will have done a grand job.
