Former Town favourite Fuifui Moimoi leaving Rochdale Hornets

Fuifui Moimoi (Ben Challis)

Former Workington Town favourite Fuifui Moimoi is among 13 players who are leaving Rochdale Hornets.

The veteran is 42 now and signed for the Rochdale two years ago when he made his debut in April 2021, coming off the bench in their pre-season game against the North Wales Crusaders.

The Hornets say they will operate under a reduced plying budget in 2023 due to several financial factors affecting the club.

Rising operational costs at the Crown Oil Arena, coupled with a significant reduction in central distribution since 2022, form part of the rational for a reduced budget.

Rochdale also say income streams such as car parking and stadium merchandising have ceased due to a change in position from the landlord. Attendances have also dropped.

The 13 players leaving Rochdale also include former Whitehaven utility back Gregg McNally who played for Cumbria in the recent game with Jamaica.

Moimoi played 43 times for Town in his time at the club and scored 13 tries, following-up with 33 games for Rochdale and another 13 tries.

He has been capped nine times for his native Tonga but has also played 12 times for New Zealand.

Moimoi made his name playing over 200 games in ten years for Paramatta Eels and before joining Town had played for Leigh Centurions and the Toronto Wolfpack.

Also leaving Rochdale are  Zac Baker, Gavin Bennion, Paul Brearley (retired), Ben Calland (retired), Rangi Chase, Jimmy Connaughton, Ben Forster, Luke Fowden, Cobi Green, Lewis Sheridan and Rob Worrincy.

They have re-signed Dan Nixon, Ben Killan, Cole Connolly, Joe Purcell, Harry Swarbrick and AJ Boardman for 2023.
