Workington Comets will ride again next year in British speedway – after folding at the end of the 2018 season.

The British Speedway Promoters Association have announced that initial acceptance has been given for Workington/Northside to join the National Development League in 2023.

Confirmation is expected at the AGM for the National Development League which will be held on Tuesday, November 29.

The former Northside training track has been revamped by Carlisle businessman Andrew Bain with the guidance of former Workington and Glasgow star Steve Lawson.

Today, a delighted Lawson said: “Andrew Bain becomes the new promoter of the Workington Comets. This is what we’ve all been waiting for – the return of the Comets.”

Although there was initially some doubt as to whether a revived club at Northside could use the Comets name that was subsequently approved and the nickname will be used once again.

It was first used in 1970 when Ian Thomas and Jeff Brownhut first brought speedway to Derwent Park, and after closing for over a decade the Comets were revived again in 1999 by Tony Mole and Ian Thomas.

Ironically, when they closed after the 2018 season, the Comets had enjoyed the best season in their history with a treble of trophies including the League Championship for the first time.
