People can help shape a major regeneration project for Barrow’s town centre.

Barrow was awarded £16 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund to transform the Barrow Market building.

Along with £1.5 million in match funding from Barrow Borough Council, it is hoped the scheme will create a thriving and vibrant town centre that attracts more people, offers a range of experiences and increases spending to boost the local economy.

Now, people are invited to provide feedback on the different elements of the proposal as part of the design process. The consultation period runs from today, December 2 until Friday, December 23.

Ann Thomson, the Leader of Barrow Borough Council, said: “Undertaking a major regeneration scheme like this is rare so we welcome such an exciting opportunity for the whole borough.

“We know shopping habits have changed, something that has been accelerated by the COVID pandemic, and that this has had an impact on town centres up and down the country. This is our chance to do something about it in Barrow, so our town centre has a bright future ahead of it.

“I hope as many people as possible take part in the consultation so they can find out more about the proposals and help shape what’s to come.”

The project includes a new exterior and shared entrance for the market hall and neighbouring arts and entertainment venue The Forum, a new community hub, as well as improvements to Duke Street to create better transport connections. There will also be a pocket park and space for outdoor events.

Manchester-based Buttress Architects, working with designers OPEN and engineers WSP, were selected during a competitive tender process to complete the design element of the scheme.

Feedback from the engagement events will be used to inform the proposal before a planning application is submitted in spring 2023. It is anticipated that work could get underway next summer.

Engagement events will take place:

  • Saturday December 3 at Barrow Market, 11am-2pm
  • Monday December 5 at Tesco Extra, 12-2pm
  • Saturday December 10 at The Dock Museum, 11am-2pm
  • Wednesday December 14 at Barrow Market, 11am-2pm

Printed copies of the consultation surveys can be completed at these events.

People can complete an online survey by visiting Barrow Borough Council’s website at barrowbc.gov.uk/regen

Printed copies will be available from Barrow Town Hall during opening hours.

Cllr Thomson added: ““Please come along and take part in the consultation or complete the survey online. We want to regenerate the town centre – to breathe new life into it – and it’s important that people are able to play a part in that process.”
