Cockermouth continued their progress in Counties 1 Cumbria with a hard-fought 29-12 win at Wigton.
But it’s not just with the first team that the Strawberry How club is making strides as other games on the day emphasised.
They were also able to put out a second team, a Colts team and a veterans side while there were several youth age group games on Sunday.
The first team are in a battle for second place in the League with Egremont and after the win at Lowmoor Road are only a point behind the Bleach Green side.
The young Wigton side were gritty opponents who put in a lot of effort but need to learn how to concede fewer penalties which put the opposition in good field positions.
Indeed, as it was, they still made Cockermouth dig deep and produce some of their best rugby to earn the points.
Cockermouth had started strongly and took the lead with a try from Johnny Crichton following a flowing move, but which had stemmed from two early penalties conceded by the hosts.
From the restart Wigton won the ball back, put together some good phases of play and scored a try through Steven Harris.
The game settled into a fairly even contest with Cockermouth using their forwards to carry the ball while Wigton tried to move it through the backs.
Discipline was a problem continually for Wigton and yellow cards cost them.
Cockermouth scored again through Will Gate from a pushover try and they then made it 15-5 from an excellent backs move which was finished by winger Greg Vickers.
It was then the Wasps turn to lose a man to the bin and from the resultant penalty Ben Postlethwaite went over for a try which Stuart Carruthers converted.
The second-half was played mainly in the middle of the field until the final 20 minutes when Cockermouth had the better of things. Again Wigton conceded too many penalties and had a man in the bin.
After a flurry of activity on the Wigton line Cockermouth made the breakthrough with James Sewell finishing off in the corner and Ed Gate converted.
The final try of the game was the best as the Cockermouth backs and forwards linked impressively and Jake Moore finished it off with the touchdown which Gate converted.
