New year’s resolution? Entries now open for Lorton 10k

A popular road race which has raised thousands of pounds for a West Cumbrian school will take place later this year.

Lorton 10k is organised by the Friends of Lorton School. Hundreds of people have taken part over the years – including fell runner Ricky Lightfoot, who still holds the men’s record of 32.22.

Set up around 12 years ago by a group of parents who loved running, the event includes the whole community, with the likes of Lorton WI and local mountain rescue team members helping out.

This year’s event takes place on March 11 and entries are now open.

Andy Williamson, who is one of the organisers this year, said: “It’s a great community effort and helps the school a lot. It has paid for play equipment and helps pay for things like trips and music and swimming lessons for the pupils.”

The race starts at Lorton Bridge and does a loop down towards Loweswater, up Scale Hill and back to finish at the school.
