Plans to extend a fish and chip shop have been approved by South Lakeland District Council.
The application form said the expansion at Crakeside Fish and Chips, Crakeside Business Park, Greenodd, would lead to an increase in the number of staff – from five full-time and two part-time to six full-time and four part-time.
A planning statement submitted by Dalcour Maclaren in support of the proposal suggested that there were two main reasons for the application.
The first was that an existing timber lean-to, which is to be demolished as part of the works, was situated on top of a high-pressure gas main.
The development, said the statement, would allow applicant Cadent Gas to regain access to this gas main, ensuring a continuous supply of energy to the local community.
The second, it said, was that the original permission for the lean-to expired in 2014 and that ‘it must now be removed’.
“It is proposed that an extension to the front of the shop will be constructed in its place, and that Cadent are obliged to do this in a previous agreement with the shop owner/landowner,” said the statement.
Concerns over customer parking provision were expressed in a representation from Angus Armer, of Henry Armer & Son, an agricultural engineer and groundscare specialist based in Main Street, Greenodd.
“Cars use our car park with little respect or thought for our property, and block our access daily,” he said. “Nobody has made any effort to remedy this. Cars park too close to the junctions, blocking visibility, and park both sides of the road, obstructing the main road.”
He claimed the Henry Armer & Son premises was frequently left with litter with no attempt to collect it at any time.
According to the application form, there will be no change in the number of parking spaces – 11 – that currently exist at the site. The planning statement said the extension, to be introduced at the front of the fish and chip shop, would be 12 sq metres in size.
