Changes to Whitehaven squad ahead of London Broncos clash

Whitehaven coach Jonty Gorley has made two changes to his squad for the home Championship clash with London Broncos.

Jacob Douglas and Junior Nsemba replace the injured Sam Freeman and trialist Lewis Fairhurst who were involved last week.

Full-back Freeman left the field at Bradford last week with a hamstring injury in the last minute while Fairhurst, who wasn’t involved in the matchday squad, has now left the club.

Haven originally had four pre-season trialists – Brazilian Jorge Cabel, former Workington Town forward John Hutchings and Kells prop Ross Ainley.

Only Ainley was subsequently offered a contract and he is again included in Gorley’s 21 for the game.

Loan signings Zach Eckersley and Harvey Hill have been named in Mike Eccles’ 21-man squad ahead of kick-off.

Welsh international Dalton Grant is an absentee though, he misses out with a rib injury picked up on Sunday in the opening defeat to Batley.

Otherwise, Eccles reported a clean bill of health and is excited to make the journey north.

“We feel much better for last week’s game against Batley,” said Eccles. “We feel a bit more battle hardened and ready to go.

“I expect us to be a lot better and sharper than Round One. We were disappointed with that result but we’ve re-focused and can’t wait for Sunday.

“We’re expecting a tough game, it’s always tough in Cumbria. We’ve had a good week of preparation and collectively we all feel in a better place than this time last week.

“We’re pleased to welcome Zach (Eckersley) and Harvie (Hill) into the squad and travel in good confidence hopeful of picking up some useful points.”

Eckersley and Whitehaven-born Hill will be up against their Wigan team-mates Douglas and Nsemba.

The Whitehaven squad is: Eccleston, Taylor, Teare, Dixon, Bishop, McAvoy, Walker, Holliday, Lanskey, Aiye, Doran, Tabu, Singleton, Bradley, O-Brien, Castle, Rourke, Spencer-Tonks, Ainley, Douglas, Nsemba.

Broncos: Albert, Bassett, Bienek, Davis, Eckersley, Hill, Horsman, Hoyes, B. Leyland, O. Leyland, Lovell, Macani, Monk, Natoli, Parata, Raiwalui, Silva, Stock, Ulberg, Walker, Williams.
