A Cumbrian nursery has had its services suspended and will close for six weeks.

Shining Stars Nursery, in Bongate, Appleby, will remain closed until March 23 while the education watchdog investigates concerns about its services.

A sign in the window from Ofsted said it was investigating its belief that a ‘child may be exposed at risk of harm’.

The nursery’s services, for under-fives, were suspended on Friday.

It is not clear what prompted the suspension, but Ofsted make clear that it does not mean the provider has done something wrong and added that it did not automatically mean the provider was unsuitable to provide care in the future.

The education watchdog automatically suspends every nursery for six weeks where there are concerns so its inspectors and other agencies can investigate.

It will lift the suspension within the automatic six-week period if it believes children are no longer at risk, it said.

Ofsted said: “It gives us or the provider time to take steps to reduce or remove any risk to children. We will end the suspension as soon as we are satisfied that children are not at risk.”

The notice in the window

The nursery can appeal the decision by Ofsted.

Shining Stars Nursery was set up in 2014. According to Companies House, Samantha Jane and Martyn John Alderson are directors and it employs 11 people.

It was last inspected by Ofsted in January 2020 and was given a good rating. At that time, it was caring for 50 children.

Shining Stars has been contacted for comment.
