
Barrow Raiders slipped to their second home defeat in the Championship when they went down 36-16 to Sheffield Eagles.
The visitors were too strong for the Raiders who had lost 24-4 at home to Toulouse last week.
It took only four minutes for the Eagles to go ahead when there was enough space for Kris Welham to get over for the opening try which Cory Aston converted.
But Barrow came back strongly and on 11 minutes they were level when Ellis Gillam did well, getting an arm free to snake it out and touchdown. Ryan Shaw converted.
Good work from Anthony Thackeray put Sheffield deep into Barrow territory and Welham’s second try restored the lead. Aston converted.
On 24 minutes Sheffield scored again and it was more good work from Thackeray which set up the try. He linked with Aston to put Matty Dawson over for an unconverted try.
Barrow were finding it hard defending against an imaginative attack and four minutes from the break Ross Oakes got over and Aston converted.
There was encouragement for Barrow a minute later when Jarrad Sammut ducked under a couple of defenders to get the ball down for a try converted by Shaw and a 12-22 deficit at the break.
Two minutes into the second half Sheffield went in again. A clever grubber from Ben Jones-Bishop landed perfectly for Oakes to gather and collect his second try. Aston’s conversion effort came back off the post.
Then on 48 minutes Sheffield were in again as Bayley Liu broke through the Barrow defence from 30 metres out.
Barrow needed to score next to stay in the contest and they did so on 51 minutes when Shane Toal got in at the corner.
The final word in the contest came from Sheffield and the try for Thackeray, converted by Aston in the 61st minute was the last score of the game,
Barrow had a lot of pressure in the final quarter but the Sheffield defence held firm.
