A South Cumbrian town is undergoing £30,000-worth of improvements.
Market Street in Dalton will benefit from new planters, trees and benches within the shopping area and a noticeboard in Tudor Square.
The works, being carried out by local company Charnley’s, are being funded from the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund secured by Barrow Borough Council.
Councillor Lee Roberts, deputy leader of Barrow Borough Council and its lead member for economic development, said: “We are delighted to see this work get underway to deliver a series of improvements that will have such a positive impact on Market Street in Dalton.
“Enhancements of this nature provide a whole range of benefits for everyone as well as a boost to the local economy by encouraging people to visit and enjoy spending more time in their town centre.
“It is also important that a local firm is carrying out this work on behalf of the community. Our thanks go to Charnley’s for their approach to this, which has been to ensure the available funding works as hard as possible for the benefit of the whole town.”
Work to install the improvements in Market Street has already begun and is due to last until March 22. As the work does not include the highway, only minimal disruption is expected.
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund – part of the Government’s Levelling Up agenda – was launched in April 2022 and £2,477,528 was allocated to Barrow Borough Council.
Seven projects will be delivered in the borough using a share of the funding in year one.
Years two and three of the plan will be delivered by the new Westmorland and Furness Council which will provide all services across the area from April 1, replacing Barrow Borough Council, South Lakeland District Council, Eden District Council and Cumbria County Council.
