Aldi has given all store assistants in Cumbria a pay rise.

Starting pay for Aldi store assistants will increase to £11.40 per hour from July 1 and based on length of service, pay rates will rise even further to £12.30.

The new starting rate is 13 per cent higher than it was a year ago and the rates are higher than the Real Living Wage, set by the Living Wage Foundation of £10.90 per hour.

Aldi will also continue to pay for breaks for which the average Cumbrian store assistant is worth an additional £927.

The announcement follows a series of pay increases, including hourly rates for 7,000 warehouse workers across the UK and Cumbria.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “We believe our colleagues are the best in the sector and we are committed to ensuring they are also the best paid.

“We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi in Cumbria and are pleased to become the first UK supermarket to pay a minimum of £11.40 per hour to all Store Assistants.”
