Owners of Penrith’s Alhambra Cinema have issued an urgent plea for people to support the business.
Rising costs and falling audience numbers mean the town centre family-owned cinema is at risk of shutting its doors for the last time.
It is spending £175 a day on electricity, owner Alan Towers said – which means its bill so far this year is almost £15,000.
He added: “The cinema is unsustainable for a small family business in the long term, sadly.”
Manager Matt Bainbridge told Radio Cumbria that the cinema could close as early as June.
From Friday the cinema is offering £5 tickets for all films apart from event cinema screenings while family favourites will be shown over weekends for £2.50 per person.
