Wigton came home with the Hawkshead Brewery Shield when they contested a four-team tournament at Ambleside.
They had the opportunity to get involved after their Papa John’s Plate opponents pulled-out and they were handed a bye.
Subsequently they took a squad of 23 to Ambleside for the four-team tournament in which the teams played each other over 40-minute games.
Wigton coach David Warwick said: “It was an excellent day out providing plenty of playing opportunities for the team with 17-year-old Jack Brough making his senior debut and displaying his physicality.
“Fellow Colt Jordan Moore on the wing showed he is improving game by game.”
Wigton opened the tournament against the hosts Ambleside and ran in some good tries, looking to quickly move the ball wide at every opportunity and attack the space.
It finished 33-0 to Wigton with the rapidly improving Will Hodgson grabbing a hat-trick.
Wigton’s second game against Furness was played in a similar fashion. On a heavy pitch against a bigger team, the ability to move the ball wide quickly proved the difference where young Charlie Bell showed his pace on the wing with two tries. They finished winners by 52-7.
The final game was against Windermere, which was the decider as they had won their previous two games.
With the pitch showing wear and tear and Windermere having a big pack it was never going to be easy for the Wigton side. Under severe pressure in the scrums they did well to keep getting the ball away and once out in the backs they looked dangerous.
They won the game 21-12 and the Shield with tries from Will Hodgson, Dan Cousins and Charlie Bell which were all converted by Jack Wilson.
Warwick added: “Ambleside deserve a lot of credit for organising the tournament and getting 60-plus players enjoying games of rugby.”
