A Cumbrian café has been named a local gem in this year’s Good Food Guide.

Staff at Harry’s Café Bar at Yew Tree Barn, Low Newton, are busy celebrating after the eatery made its first ever debut in the foodie bible.

The guide highlights Harry’s as the sort of café you ‘always hope to find’ where ‘heartily generous homemade food comes with a dose originality, making it the best of place and time’.

It also praised chef Simon Rogan alumnus Gerald van der Walt and called the ‘Lakes spot’ charming.

Head chef Gerald van der Walt said: ‘’I’m delighted that the hard work we’ve put into Harry’s Café has been recognised and that we’ve been acknowledged as a ‘Local Gem’.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be included in the Good Food Guide which recognises so many of the chefs who I’ve been inspired by throughout the course of my career.’’

For over 70 years, The Good Food Guide has been the trusted source of information on where to eat across Great Britain.

It is independent and is compiled by combining reader feedback with anonymous inspections by a long-standing team of inspectors, who cross the country, reviewing as they go – eating as any other customer, paying their own bills and then leaving to reflect on their experience and setting pen to paper.

Each place that is included in the guide is assessed on its uniqueness, warmth, deliciousness and how strongly it would be recommended to friends and family. These then influence the overall ratings of ‘good’, ‘very good’, ‘exceptional’, or in very few cases ‘world class’.

Harry’s now features alongside 20 other fellow Cumbrian restaurants, pubs and cafes, including the likes of Allium at Askham Hall, The Drunken Duck, Barngates, The Yan, Grasmere, and 1863 at Pooley Bridge.

Pamela Wilson, co-owner of Yew Tree Barn, added: ‘’We are immensely proud that we’ve been listed alongside some top-notch company in The Good Food Guide.

“Head chef Gerald and his team work to deliver the best possible dining experience for our customers, whether that’s breakfast, lunch or Sunday lunch or one of our regular evening dining events.

“As a team there’s no doubt that they will continue to build on what they’ve achieved so far and continue to strive to be the best they can possibly be to ensure our customers keep coming back for more.’’
