Cumberland premiership goes to wire

The destination of the Cumberland County League Premiership trophy could be decided this afternoon in what has been a closely fought competition.

Three teams could potentially finish their league programme on the same number of points.

Wigton Harriers and Gosforth have completed their fixtures, Maryport Athletic travel to take on Whitehaven Miners, where a win will give Athletic points parity with both Wigton and Gosforth.

Gosforth have a much lower goal difference than Wigton and as a consequence are out of the running.  Harriers are currently in the driving seat having a greater goal difference advantage of five over Maryport.

However, Maryport will take the title if they overcome Miners by six goals or more.

If the goal difference is nullified in tomorrow’s game, the Championship will be decided on the number of goals scored.  Maryport currently holds the advantage in that department.

Maryport and Wigton clash next Thursday in the final of the Benevolent Cup.  The game is being staged at Gillford Park, home of Carlisle City with a 7pm kick-off.  This promises to be another close encounter.
