The Holmen Iggesund Cumberland ARL programme this weekend may only have three games but each one should be a cracker.
They look to be three games in which well-matched opponents go head-to-head and the outcome is far from a foregone conclusion.
Match of the day is a potential title decider at Distington where Wath Brow A are the visitors with the League’s top two sides so far likely to go at it hammer and tongs.
Both were without a game last week so will go into the contest fresh and raring to put one over on their main rivals.
The other two games are in Maryport and are equally difficult to predict although home advantage might be the telling factor in both.
Maryport, narrowly beaten by Cockermouth last week, host Egremont Rangers A while Glasson Rangers entertain Lowca.
So much these days, however, depends on the strength of the teams put out by each club. With weddings, stag dos, festivals etc – not to mention holidays, injuries and work commitments – there are many occasions when sides are hurriedly thrown together with numerous key players missing.
It so often begs the question – why not revert to the old season of September to April – to which several will answer they would lose their rugby union players who are able to double up under summer rugby league.
Meanwhile a number of our amateur clubs are trying to make a day of their home matches by putting on entertainment afterwards to encourage opponents, supporters and others to enjoy more than the rugby.
For instance Maryport have the acoustic duo US-2 performing in the club after their game with Egremont Rangers.
Maryport, too, have a mouth-watering speakers evening coming-up in a fortnight on May 27 when a collection of former Workington Town stars will be reflecting on their careers.
They are headed by special guest Big Jim Mills and he will be joined on the night by Eddie Bowman, Peter Gorley, Ralph Calvin and Alan Banks – in the company of top MC Howard Nicholson.
That’s one Town fans of a certain vintage will not want to miss. Tickets are £25.
