Good night for hound trailing

Nicola McMaster with Rodney Raider

The first in a series of three trails at Kirkland was staged last night by the HTA.

It proved a good night for trailing as the nice weather had got out and running was perfect for the hounds.

It turned out to be a good meeting again for Barry Laidler and Caroline Clough as they won the senior hounds with Winterfell.

He beat home arch-rival Miterdale Duchess who finished second for Denis Pear and Jackie Gill, with Brian Graham’s much improved Reebok finishing in third.

The Open Puppy race proved to be just as exciting with the majority of the top hounds competing.

Embrace was favourite, along with the fancied Glamorous Ava the local hound for James McClelland and Mel for Graham Reid who was also running.

As they came on the finish there were three hounds clear and it was an impressive finish by Rodney Raider for Nicola McMaster and David Todhunter as he came clear of Glamorous Ava on the long straight finish with Denise Bland’s Huntsman’s Sparkle finishing in third place.

Winterfell with trainer Tom Bell

In the last trail it was Mike Watson’s Persian Gold who came home in front from the main pack with Martin and Molly Burrow’s Thorn Thunder finishing a close second and Overwater Hunter finishing in third place for Carol Tunstall, formerly in the Borders Association, so good to see them getting a ticket.

The next Kirkland trail is to be held on Monday, May 15 with the first race being slipped at 6.30pm.

There will be refreshments on the field, bookmakers in attendance with excellent viewing from the top of the hill as the hounds come onto the finish.

Anyone wanting to attend who might not know the exact whereabouts should head towards Kirkland village then there will be signs pointing them to the trails.
