West Cumbrian town set to hold charity week

A West Cumbrian town plans to run a charity week to support good causes.

The event, in Cockermouth, is organised by the town’s chamber of trade and will run from Monday, July 17 to Saturday July 22 – culminating in a fundraising day on the Saturday, where businesses and charities will come together on the streets.

The chamber said: “The idea is that each shop or venue will select its own charity, local or national, then raise money for that charity over the week. That could be by giving a donation for each item sold, having collection tins at the till area, or organising with the charity to come along and hold a pop-up shop and sell products to raise funds and awareness.

“Non-retail businesses could do something a little different, like hold a cake sale during the week, so other office members and customers can buy something, or organise a staff sponsored walk.”

Alongside the business involvement, the chamber will invite charities including mountain rescue, Blood Bikes and the Great North Air Ambulance Service and local organisations like Rotary, WIs, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service to set up a stall in the town to raise money themselves.

It follows a very successful charity weekend held last year in the town.

Andrew Marshall, of the chamber, said: “The whole ethos of this event is that Cockermouth is giving something back to lots of charities after a very difficult couple of years.

“Hopefully, this will show off Cockermouth as the caring community town we know it is, but also increase trade with an increased foot fall to the small businesses who’ve also had a tough couple of years.”

Traders and businesses in the town who wish to take part can email [email protected] with their chosen charity and brief details of any promotions.
