Workington Town weekly fixtures hit by postponement

Just when Workington Town were looking to be playing regular, weekly fixtures have been hit by a postponement.

Sunday’s trip to play North Wales Crusaders has been called off and instead will hopefully be slotted in over the weekend of July 15-16.

It’s been a stop start season so far for League One sides but after Sunday’s game at home to Cornwall, which they won convincingly, Town had an unbroken run of fixtures.

Not now however after North Wales issued a statement explaining the reasons for the enforced postponement.

It said: “Having been unable to play home fixtures at Eirias Park for several weeks due to the grass pitch being replaced with a 4G pitch, North Wales Crusaders were extremely disappointed to be told by the stadium on 1 June that works to the pitch had been delayed and that the main pitch would not be available for use for our next scheduled home fixture against Workington on 11 June.

“The news is extremely frustrating as we were told two weeks ago that the works were on schedule and that the stadium would be available to us, bringing the sporting and financial benefits we’ve missed out on throughout the time that the pitch was unavailable.

“This now means we have to find an alternative venue and seek the co-operation of the RFL and Workington for the fixture to be played at an alternative venue on an alternative date.

“We have been in discussions with the RFL and Workington throughout the weekend and can advise that the fixture will take place at a venue to be decided on the weekend of 15/16 July.

“We share the frustrations of supporters of both clubs but the matter is out of our control. We would like to thank the RFL and Workington for their co-operation in resolving the issue.

“Details of the date and venue will be announced as soon as possible”

Town are next in action on Sunday 18 June when the League One’s bottom side London Skolars visit Derwent Park.
