Ruby Hutchison made Cumbria Cricket League history recently when she scored an unbeaten century in a Division Two game.
The 18-year-old carried her bat after 40 overs and hit 135no as Cockermouth 3rds went on to beat Seascale 2nds by 89 runs.
She is the first female cricketer to hit a century in the League and she also topped the League’s honours board that week for that spectacular batting performance.
Her fine effort also earned a shout out on a cricket podcast hosted by Greg James and Jimmy Anderson, with the England player acknowledging the fact that Ruby “played for Ben Stokes’ old club.”
Vice captain Ben King shared an opening stand of 93 with Ruby and said: “I had the pleasure of being there when she reached 50 and I was out umpiring when she reached her 100. It was a wonderful innings.
“Not only is she the opening bat, she is also a very good wicket keeper for us.”
Ruby, a former pupil of Keswick School, is currently on a gap year and in September will start studying at Lancaster University.
Cricket has been her sport since she was 11 and she has gone on to represent Cumbria at various age groups right through to Under-18s where she is the current captain. She has also played for the Cumbria Women’s team since she was 14.
Her mother Tracey said she was more nervous approaching her first 50 for the Under-14s than she was when reaching the nineties before getting to three figures.
