It’s early days of course but Kendal Town are among four teams sharing the lead in the North West Counties Premier League.
A second successive 1-0 win at home to Longridge Town kept them up with the pace alongside big-hitters Wythenshawe, Bury and Burscough.
It was also encouraging for the seventh successive game the Mintcakes pulled in over 300 fans – 330 on this occasion.
“We certainly aren’t getting carried away and will be keeping our feet firmly on the ground,” said chairman Michael O’Neill.
“It’s been a good start but we know we can, and have to do better. We created at least six good chances and our goal was a penalty.
“But the big thing is that we are making opportunities and I am sure we will start to take them as the season develops.”
Skipper Rob Wilson scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on 67 minutes.
They also needed two excellent saves from new keeper Chris Cheetham – the first at 0-0 and the second when Kendal had the lead.
Following new guidelines over substitution rules time added on at the end was lengthy – nine minutes, which stretched to 10 minutes and 48 seconds.
Manager Jimmy Marshall said: “Delighted to start with two 1-0 victories, especially as we couldn’t buy a clean sheet last season.
“We should probably have won both games by more but we are happy about the way we have started. We are playing on the front foot and I think the fans are realising that we have a committed group of lads now who can also play a bit.”
Kendal resume on Saturday with another home game, this time in the FA Cup, when Consett are the visitors to Parkside Road.
