Mitchells has put its Cockermouth town centre site up for sale with a price tag of over £1 million.

The company uses the site as its saleroom, and it also has popular cafe Veeva! plus offices, warehouse units and a one-bedroom flat.

Mitchells has recently won planning permission to build a new saleroom on land near its livestock mart on the edge of town.

Mark Wise, a director of the company said: “The complex was never intended as a saleroom and was originally part of the original in-town livestock mart which we relocated in 2002.

“Our in-town site is not ideally situated from the point of view of vehicular access, parking etc and in particular on sale and viewing days.

“We have planning permission to build a new saleroom on our out-of-town site where our livestock centre is based and are therefore exploring this possibility.”

He said the sale would help with that move and added that the move was by no means definite.

The Station Road complex extends in total to approx. 2,830sq m and is on the market with Mitchells Land Agency.

The agents say the building has the potential use for residential, hotel, care home/assisted living and retail.

The site forms two distinct areas and is being offered for sale in 2 lots and as a whole.

Lot one is the Victorian stone-faced core of the building with roadside frontage to Station Road and Lorton Road containing on the ground floor an auction house, a café, offices and sales hall and offices and a one bed flat on the first floor all under a slate roof.

Extending along Lorton Road are two warehouses.

Lot two consists of warehouse units on Lorton Road. The buildings currently provide for warehousing and deliveries to the auction house, additional auction space and with a loading bay to Lorton Street.
