A much-needed first win of the season lifted Carlisle United out of League One’s early relegation zone.
A goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time by Joe Garner doubled the United lead and the 2-0 victory was greeted by huge roars from the home fans.
The first-half action failed to produce a goal but gradually Carlisle looked the side most likely to break the deadlock.
Shrewsbury’s new full-back Mal Benning was closest to an early goal when his strike whistle just wide while Jordan Gibson had the Shrews keeper Marko Marosi in trouble until he pushed a strike from outside the box over the bar.
Carlisle took the lead in rather fortunate circumstances in the 57th minute when Owen Moxon’s corner took a deflection off a couple of players in the box before going in off Tom Bayliss for an own goal.
Carlisle were close to a second when Jon Mellish miscued a chance and sliced wide and then Luke Plange struck a post when he got on the end of a Callum Guy cross.
New Carlisle keeper Jokull Andresson had one big save to make when he got down to deal with a well-struck shot from Daniel Udoh.
Carlisle’s victory was assured late in time added on when Joe Garner netted from a cross by fellow substitute Terry Ablade.
