Legendary fellrunner Bill Teasdale’s trophies set to be sold at Mitchells’ Antiques & Fine Art Sale

Mitchells’ next Antiques & Fine Art Sale features 1,300 lots – including trophies won by legendary fellrunner Bill ‘King of the Fells’ Teasdale.

The sale also features 100 lots of fine silverware, a collection of Art Glass from the Scottish Borders and items from the estate of Pearl Wilson.

It takes place from Wednesday, September 13 to Friday, September 15.

Bill Teasdale, died in January aged 98. He was born at Todcrofts Farm in Caldbeck in 1924 and came from true Cumbrian farming stock.

He went on to become a sporting hero and local celebrity with his outstanding fell running prowess and achievements, winning many races over a long sporting career.

Items for sale from his estate include a substantial number of fell running trophies and medals as well as other personal items such as pocket watches, photographs and furniture.

Highlights among the silver include a Queen Anne Britannia standard silver tankard, possibly by William Mathew of London circa 1703/1704 and weighing 614 grams, which has an auction estimate of £1,000 to £1,500.

George III tankard

A George III silver lidded tankard by John Foster II London 1776, repousse with scroll work and flowerheads and measuring 22cm high, is expected to sell for £800 to £1,200.

Nathaniel Mills snuff box

A Nathaniel Mills snuff box made in Birmingham in 1838 depicting Windsor Castle has an estimate of £300 to £400.

Cartier Brooch

Jewellery includes a rare Cartier 18ct gold brooch in the design of a Panther with 39 round brilliant diamonds and an emerald ‘eye’ with an estimate of £6,000 to £8,000.

Art Glass

A large single owner collection of Art Glass from the Scottish Borders comprising 75 lots is also for sale, including Monart, Ysart, Strathearn, Nazeing, Webb, Murano and Whitefriars with estimates ranging from £30 to £300.

Particular highlights include a collection of five Whitefriars bark effect black vases and a bowl with an estimate of £200 to £300, a Monart Art glass vase measuring 33cm high valued at £150 to £250 and a collection of four Monart green glass vases which are also expected to sell for £150 to £250.

Furniture

William & Mary walnut cabinet

Highlights among the furniture include a very fine early 18th century William and Mary walnut cabinet on stand with an estimate of £8,000 to £10,000.

A 19th century Aesthetic Movement mantel clock by the Goldsmith Company, silver plated, bronze and enamel, is expected to sell for £800 to £1,200.

A Victorian walnut cased upright symphonium playing 19” discs on two combs with a penny slot is expected to make £700 to £1,000.

Pictures

Wainwright pen & ink drawing Kirby in Furness

Among the pictures are three original pen and ink drawings by the renowned fellwalker, author and illustrator Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991), each signed, with estimates of £300 to £500 including Cottages at Kirkby in Furness.

Ceramics

Pair of continental urns

The ceramics section features a substantial pair of continental urns of neoclassical design with gilt decoration measuring 48cm high with a valuation of £200 to £300.

Coalbrookdale garden seat

A Coalbrookdale & Co nasturtium pattern garden seat marked C B Dale Co should make £400 to £600.

Textiles include a single owner collection of 38 samplers with estimates ranging from £40 to £300.

When does Mitchells Antiques & Fine Art Sale take place?

Day one

Day one of the sale on Wednesday September 13 includes a single owner collection from the estate of the late Pearl Wilson, fell racing trophies and other personal effects from the estate of the late legendary fell runner Bill Teasdale, Asian art, a single owner collection of art glass from the Scottish Borders, ceramics and glassware, jewellery, pocket watches and coins and silver and allied wares.

Day two

Day two of the sale on Thursday September 14 will include paintings, drawings and prints, objects of art, collectors’ items and metalware, table boxes, wall clocks, barometers and mirrors.

Day three

Day three of the sale on Friday September 15 will include textiles, furniture, longcase clocks, dining tables and chairs.

When can I see the lots for Mitchells Antiques & Fine Art Sale?

Lots are on view in the Saleroom from Sunday September 10, 11am to 3pm, Monday September 11 and Tuesday September 12, 10am to 5pm and throughout each sale day.

Drop-in valuation events

Mitchells will also be holding drop-in valuation events at its Cockermouth saleroom on Friday September 22 and Friday October 20.

Hosted by picture specialist James Forster and jewellery specialist Mark Wise, members of the public are invited to drop in with their items between 10am and 2pm for a free appraisal.

In particular, Mitchells are seeking pictures by local artists to feature in a special section of Cumbrian art in their next Antiques & Fine Art Sale from November 29 to December 1.

South Lakes pop-up valuation event

For those in the South Lakes and wider area, valuer David Brookes and sporting specialist James Moore will be holding a free pop-up valuation event on Friday September 22 in aid of Coniston Community Tourist Information Centre.

Drop by the tourist information centre between 10am and 2pm for a free valuation of items, including sporting goods for hunting, shooting and fishing, in return for a donation to support the work of the TIC.

David will also be hosting two more pop-up valuation events in aid of St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston on Friday October 13 at the hospice and another on Friday October 27 at Millom Library.

Just drop by with your items between 10am to 2pm for a free valuation in return for a donation to support the hospice.

When is the next sale at Mitchells?

Mitchells’ next Country Sporting Sale will be held from Wednesday October 11 to Friday October 13.
