Carlisle United won the derby, but Carlisle City took most of the plaudits.
The two sides fought out a 1-1 draw in the first round of the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup before United won the penalty shoot-out 4-2.
It was a remarkable effort by the Northern League side as United had nine senior players in their starting line-up.
Afterwards Jim Nichols, the United manager said: “I’m very proud of my team because I don’t think anyone would have given us a chance of finishing all square against that United line-up.”
United had taken the lead late in the first half when City’s Scott Simons, a former United keeper, couldn’t hold a shot from Ryan Edmondson and Terry Ablade was in quickly to force the ball home.
Simons redeemed himself with a couple of outstanding saves in the second-half which would have graced the Premier League.
City were quickly level on the restart when Tom Mahone fired home after the ball had popped up invitingly for him.
Competing teams in the County Cup have to agree before the game whether they are going to play extra-tie or go straight to penalties.
In this case it was agreed to decide it on a penalty shoot-out once the 90 minutes had ended all square.
Alfie McCalmont missed the first tone for the Blues, when it was saved by Simons but Ablade, Jack Robinson, Edmondson and Jayden Harris scored.
Jordan Little and Kieron Olsen missed for City while Jordan Palmer and Rob McCartney scored.
