Workington Reds Ladies are delighted to welcome back to the squad striker Megan Hay, after an absence from the game of over five years.
Megan spent five years with the club between 2011 and 2016 and would be better known as Murdock during that time.
Her dad is Gary Murdock, Workington Town rugby league club’s general manager.
She was a regular on the scoresheet chipping in with a very respectable 20-25 goals a season and also donned the captain’s armband as well.
She has a great presence on the pitch and is always keen to do her fair share of work out of possession making her presence felt.
As a young striker she spent some time with the Liverpool Ladies before they took the step up to the fully professional level.
She then returned to the local football scene playing for Whitehaven Amateurs prior to her first stint at the Reds.
Since leaving the Reds she has concentrated on her family life and welcomed her son Quinn into the world.
A diagnosis of hip dysplasia resulted in hip reconstruction surgery and this has kept her away from the game she loves for longer than she’d have liked.
Megan said: “I’ve always had an aim to return to football, but being honest, I have been unsure as to whether or not I’d be able to.
“ I’m feeling good with regards to my hip after completing my treatment and I think the time is right now to take the plunge.
“I’ve just recently started to train with the squad and it’s been great to be back in this type of environment. The squad has a lot of quality players in it and it has the potential to do well.
“The enthusiasm to deliver quality sessions from the coaches has given me real buzz about being back.”
Manager Paul Mackenzie said: “I’ve heard a lot of positives about Megan’s quality on the pitch, but unfortunately, I’ve never seen her play until she started training.
“I’m excited to see what Megan will add to the squad. She has the experience and the quality to have a real positive influence on where we want to be.
“She’s been a regular at our home games and watching her looking on from the sidelines, I could sense a real feeling of Megan’s frustration from not being able to be involved as well as a deep desire to return to the game.”
