
The new season of the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League has begun and with some fascinating line ups the opening week didn’t disappoint.
Division One league champions Workington Golf Club A started the season with a bang as they defeated Division Two league newcomers Workington Veterans Club B, 5-0.
A Ryan Ismay victory quickly followed up with a win from Bryan Walker gave the away side a 2-0 advantage. Making a comeback to league snooker Simon Frazer moved the score to 3-0 and with a break of 32 Phil Sorfleet ensured the Golfers now led 4-0.
The final frame, however, proved to be the most convincing victory of the night as Mark Cowen romped home to complete a superb Golf Club A whitewash.
Workington Conservative Club travelled to Whitehaven’s Rack Shack and with a confident performance they delivered a solid 4-1 triumph.
Julian Plaza opened up with a win in the first to put Cons 1-0 up and in restricting his opponent to just eight points Richard McCarthy made it 2-0 for the Division One side.
Two-times county champion Alan Moore perfectly executed a third frame victory for 3-0 and with an equally determined delivery Dave Holland ensured the Cons Club were 4-0 up.
Nevertheless Andy Moore gave the Rack Shack something to cheer about in the last frame of the evening with a resolute display to save the Division Two side’s blushes.
Promoted Station Road Club found Division Two new arrivals United Club B a tricky proposition winning by the odd frame at 3-2.
Station Road’s Tom Thompson opened up with a convincing victory and as team mate John Teasdale finished off the second frame nicely the top tier side went 2-0 up.
The third frame saw league debutant, and former professional, Dale Milton make a statement of intent with a cool frame winning break of 30 to pull one back for United B at 2-1.
The fourth frame proved to be pivotal, however, and with some fine cueing Michael Walker ensured Station Road Club claimed the match victory as the score moved to 3-1.
The point a frame format gave the final two players plenty to play for and with Stephen Harrison up to the task he took the last for the United Club to pull the score back to a very respectable 3-2.
Finally, last season’s Division Two champions, Flimby Social, launched their Division One campaign with a solid 4-1 away win against Workington Golf Club B.
A Kev Forster first frame win put a point on the board for Flimby but as Ryan Pearson put his best foot forward he took the second to level for the Golf Club B at 1-1.
Normal service was resumed in frame three nevertheless as Sal Cakmak made it 2-1 and with Flimby captain Geoff Banton proving victorious in the next an unassailable 3-1 lead was gained.
In the last the county doubles champion, Kevin Kirkham, was in no mood to offer any favours and with the highest points total of the match he took the last frame with aplomb to deliver a satisfying Flimby victory.
