Booths supermarket chain is the first in the UK to axe its self-service checkouts – except in two of its Lake District stores.
The family-run retailer said 26 of its 28 stores will see staff back on the tills after customer feedback.
It is understood only the Keswick and Windermere branches will keep the self-service checkouts.
People said they preferred staff serving them and it offered a better customer experience.
A statement from the firm said: “We have based this not only on what we feel is the right thing to do but also having received feedback from our customers.
“We will retain self-checkouts in two of our stores in the Lake District in order to meet the needs of our customers during very busy periods.”
