Workington Zebra Finches have been forced into an early end to their year, writes John Hastings.
Their highly awaited top of the table RFU North 2 League encounter with unbeaten leaders Keswick Falcons at The Ellis was postponed on Sunday morning.
Although The Ellis pitch successfully passed the early inspection, Keswick were unable to raise a team and thus both sides will finally square up on Sunday January 14 – this comes nine days after Workington kick off the new year with a visit to Penrith Panthers.
The postponement means that Workington’s dramatic victory at Upper Eden on November 18 was the perfect sign-off to 2023 – a year that will be fondly cherished following their breath-taking RFU Community Plate triumph at Twickenham.
They hope to build on this in 2024 as they push for promotion, hope to retain the Plate and compete for the new Women’s Cumbria Cup, scheduled for next spring.
That victory has clearly inspired youngsters to take up the game, as this season Workington have been running Mini Finches” training sessions and in due course, the club will be entering junior competitions.
Despite no more games this year, the Finches will continue regular training up to Christmas before taking on the Zebras Men in the annual festive charity match at The Ellis on Wednesday December 27 (2pm kick off), with bingo and entertainment to follow.
Tickets are £10, with proceeds going to Andy’s Man Club Workington and Mind Cumbria.
