Whitehaven completed a quartet of matches against the top four teams in the West Lancashire League with a 3-3 draw against Lostock St Gerard’s.
They had come through a difficult run of games with a win, two draws and a narrow defeat.
Although conditions were awful on a miserable weather day in West Cumbria the two teams served up a cracker of a game.
Both teams left the pitch leaving everything out there in search of a win, and it was a terrific advert for West Lancashire League football.
The conditions may have slightly lowered the quality of football but certainly not the entertainment.
At the start Whitehaven were on the front foot and controlling the game through good possession, creating a couple of half chances.
But it was Lostock, against he run of play, who made the breakthrough on 22 minutes with a goal from the dangerous Jon-Jo Morris. He found himself unmarked at the back post and took his chance calmly.
This then sparked a crazy 20 minutes of action as Whitehaven’s top scorer Owen Woodburn (26) put the Primrose and Blue back on level terms finishing off a great team goal with a left foot curler into the far corner.
Kian Goulding (32) then edged Whitehaven in front before Morris scored his second after 43 minutes with a near identical goal. But Whitehaven held the advantage at the break with a third goal from Travis Fyfe (45).
The second half was much like the first, end to end stuff but in conditions like this it’s often a mistake that settles it and again that was the case when Lewis Tidy (60) unfortunately put the ball into his own net while trying to clear.
Although both teams were still trying to it until the final whistle a draw was a fair result.
Chris Rourke, one of the Whitehaven coaching team, said: “We’ve shown we can compete with the top teams in this League. We don’t fear anyone but the magic trick is consistency and we’ve struggled to find it in the past.
“I honestly don’t think we are far off the top five but they do it week in and week out which has to be admired.”
On Saturday they travel to Blackpool Wren Rovers who are sixth in the table.
