LISTEN: Workington Comets’ Steve Lawson looks forward to Championship season

Cumbrian speedway fans were delighted by the return of the Workington Comets last year to a new venue at Northside.

Starting off at the lowest level, the National Development League, the Comets didn’t exactly take the competition by storm – but they had a major effect on the sport itself.

Two major championships were held at the track as the speedway authorities were so impressed with what the promotion had achieved and created at Northside.

Subsequently they were invited to step up to the Championship for 2024, which was accepted while also chosen as the venue for the prestigious Ben Fund Bonanza on March 16.

Putting together a team to compete in the Championship was a tough ask – given that 90% of the riders had already committed to other clubs by the time the Comets promotion got started on team building.

But promoters Andrew Bain and Steve Lawson along with team manager James Denham are six/sevenths there towards completing their line-up.

With so much to look forward to Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh met up with Steve Lawson for a chat on all things Comets and you can hear that interview here:
