Kevin Basnett produced a fine 101 clearance.

L&L Property Contractors Snooker League Division Two leaders Veterans Club A have dented last week’s Division One leaders, United Club A’s title challenge.

The all-Workington clash saw the Vets record a 3-2 home win that was galvanised with a fantastic 101 clearance in frame three from their captain, Kevin Basnett.

The match started with an extremely confident performance from United A captain Andrew Mitchelhill as a break of 39 allowed him to win the first frame with ease.

A close second frame could have gone either way but with Craig Davies getting stronger as the frame progressed it proved to be just enough to carry him over the line for the Vets A cueist and make it 1-1.

A real heavyweight contest in frame three started with a small contribution from Kevin Basnett and as a good safety yielded another opportunity the Vets A captain mopped up the balls for a magnificent clearance of 101 to record his second century of the season.

At 2-1 to the Vets A the United A side needed a steady head if they had any aspirations of winning the match and with Dave Chapman more than up to the task he ensured his team had that opportunity as he proved victorious for 2-2.

An edgy start to the deciding frame led to nearly all the reds landing awkwardly but in gathering momentum slowly it was Vets A’s Mark Tatton who grabbed the initiative to take frame and match in style and leave last week’s Division One leaders stunned.

Workington Golf Club A moved back to the top of Division One with a 4-1 victory over Division Two’s Workington Veterans Club B.

The defending Division One league champions opened up with a superb performance from Ryan Ismay with breaks of 34 and 49 to put the first frame on the board in lighting quick fashion.

Frame two saw a very different result as Adam Hodgson delivered an excellent win to give the Vets B hope at 1-1.

A measured victory in the next by Golf A’s Bryan Walker stole the advantage and as team mate Mark Brasted took the next an unassailable 3-1 lead was gained.

The final frame of the match still left a point to play for and with a break of 35 it was Simon Frazer who went on to claim it for a 4-1 Golf A match victory.

Flimby Social took a massive step forward in their chase of the Division One title as they recorded a 5-0 whitewash of Division Two’s bottom side Workington Golf Club B.

The home side started with a thumping win from Division One’s leading player Kevin Kirkham for a rapid fire 1-0 match lead.

Flimby super sub Dan Long wasn’t just in to make up the numbers in frame two as a solid display ensured the Division One title chasers went 2-0 up.

In the next Richard Kirkham imposed his superior knowledge of match snooker to full effect to put Flimby 3-0 up and with Michael ‘Sid’ Walker winning convincingly in frame four to extend the lead, the whitewash was on the cards.

Flimby captain Geoff Banton came to the table in the last and with a determined display the Social cueist won with ease to complete the clean sweep and stay top of the tier three player averages.

Division Two’s Workington United Club B became the second team to defeat opposition from a higher division this week as they presided 3-2 over Division One’s Station Road Club.

In the battle of the town sides United B got off to the perfect start in their home fixture as Stephen Harrison took the first. A one-sided John Teasdale victory in the second tied the match score at 1-1 but with United B captain Stephen Jackson winning frame three fairly easily the home team were back in front at 2-1.

Back came Station Road and with a steady victory from Chris Hunter the last frame was to be the one to split the two teams.

The final game of the fixture inevitably was close as both players battled it out, but with great composure it was Wayne Sinclair who took charge to nick the frame and match win in a pleasing United B performance.

Finally, Workington Conservative Club moved off the bottom of Division One with a 4-1 home victory over Division Two side, Whitehaven’s Rack Shack.

Julian Plaza got the Cons outfit off the mark in frame one with a comfortable win and Dave Holland doubled the lead with a victory in frame two to go top of the tier two leading player averages.

Former county champion, Alan Moore had too much for his opponent as he took frame three for a 3-0 Cons lead, but it was Chris McKelvey who claimed a point for the Whitehaven side as he nicked frame four.

The last frame developed into a real scrap but with some fine tactical play it was Brian Kendal who presided to extend Cons winning margin and end the match at 4-1.
