Cork City have confirmed the signing of former Workington Reds defender Niall Brookwell ahead of the new League of Ireland season which starts on Friday.
Brookwell was an un-named substitute for Cork last Friday in their final warm-up game at Bohemians and he came on for the second-half programmed as a trialist.
Cork manager Tim Clancy said: “We are delighted to have Niall on board. He’d been training with us for a number of days as well as playing a part against Bohemians.
“He’s a good pedigree, with experience at both Liverpool and Newcastle, and he’s impressed us. We wanted to add another defender to the squad and we are pleased to get the deal done.”
Speaking to the official Cork FC website Brookwell said: “I can’t wait to start the season on Friday. I’m quite a versatile player, operating at centre back but can also play right back or in the middle.
“I’m also an aggressive player but I love to get on the ball and play as well. From speaking ton the manager I know that the goal for the club this year is to win the League and get Cork back to where it belongs.”
