The road to Wembley has ended for three former Workington Reds players who were part of the Emley squad.
Emley’s FA Vase adventure is over following a 4-0 defeat to a well organised and ruthless Worcester City outfit at Claines Lane.
Despite a valiant effort, Emley were second best for most of the game on a pitch that was far from ideal for this level of football and found themselves two down and chasing the game at half time and had to play with ten men for 20 minutes with men in the sin bin.
Worcester were on top early on and Emley’s cause wasn’t helped when the pitch played a big part in injuries to two vital Emley players. One of them was ex-Reds striker and Emley’s top scorer Ruben Jerome who pulled up early on and then captain James Knowles was forced off after he made a big tackle. Jerome gingerly carried on until half time withn a muscle problem.
Ex-Reds team-mate Iyrwah Gooden also started and played the whole game while a third former Workington player, Donae Lawrence came on as a substitute for the last ten minutes.
Worcester deservedly march into the semi finals and Emley will lick their wounds before looking to get back on title track with a home game against Silsden next Saturday. The Huddersfield side lead the Northern Counties East League by six points with games in hand of their pursuers.
