South Cumbrian village post office to be converted into flat

Plans to convert a redundant post office in South Cumbria into a flat have been given the go-ahead – despite 25 objections.

Westmorland and Furness Council determined prior approval was required and approved proposals to convert the post office on School Road in Kirkby-in-Furness into a ground-floor flat.

One objector said the post office had been an integral part of the village for many years and said elderly people, as well as those that don’t drive, were struggling without it.

However, a report prepared by planning officers states: “The loss of the Post Office facility to the local community is not a consideration under the permitted development legislation.”

Kirkby Ireleth Parish Council said: “There is a substantial level of concern and objection within the local community to this application, with that the parish council would request that this application be considered at planning committee so that local residents are given the opportunity to address their concerns in person.”

In a delegated report council planners said: “It is not necessary for the application to be determined at the planning committee as applications for prior approvals are delegated matters.”

The council rejected previous proposals from Kirkby Platinum to convert Moorland Stores and the post office on School Road in Kirkby-in-Furness into two flats in December.

The conversion of the convenience store was not considered as part of this application.
