Dav Symington has been caught up as the leading scorer in the NPL Premier Division.
The Workington Reds captain has been in line to win the League’s version of the Golden Boot with 24 goals to his name this season.
But on Tuesday night Gainsborough Trinity’s sharp-shooter Declan Howe grabbed a brace to draw level with Symington at the top of the goal-scoring list. He was on target as Trinity raced to a 4-0 win at Matlock.
Howe is well known to Workington as he scored twice in both home and away games for Trinity against the Reds this season.
Symington, who took over from Conor Tinnion as captain, doesn’t do tap-ins and has scored a number of spectacular goals in his career at Borough Park.
With two games to go – at Macclesfield on Saturday and home to Guiseley on April 27 – Symington will be keen to knock in a few more to have a chance of finishing as the League’s top marksman.
Symington has also paid tribute to two team-mates Conor Tinnion and Scott Allison who have just confirmed they will be retiring at the end of the season.
He said: “They are two great lads who have my time here amazing. We’ve had ups and downs together but created memories that will last forever.”
Symington and defender Sam Smith will now take over the mantle of Reds’ senior players as they prepare for life under incoming manager Mark Fell.
