Workington speedway fans will get their first chance to see the Comets junior team – the Meteors – after Saturday’s Championship meeting with Redcar Bears.

The Meteors, like their seniors, are looking for a double having won at Redcar last week in the Northern Junior League.

James Wilson, the Meteors team manager said: “It was a successful night on track with the Metoers emulating the Comets and picking up their first win of the season on the road,

“Unfortunately just a few weeks before the start of the season our senior rider Callum Foy announced he was taking a step back from speedway which left us without a number one.

“I spoke to Ben Rathbone and I’m delighted that he agreed to ride for us this season and what a start he made at Redcar with three wins from his three rides.

“He was backed up by his partner and local lad Laylen Richardson to get a 5-1 in all three of the 500cc heats.

“In the 125cc races Casper Kluczniak and Charlie Luckman showed what they are capable off by finishing with no last places and Casper picked up a well-deserved heat win in the final race to secure the 24-12 win for the Meteors.

“After the Comets’ meeting on Saturday we stage the return leg against the Redcar Cubs so we hope the fans stick around to show their support for the Meteors.”

Line-ups for Saturday: Workington Meteors: 500cc 1. Ben Rathbone; 2. Laylen Richardson. 125cc 3. Casper Kluczniak; 4. Charlie Luckman.

Redcar Cubs: 500cc 1. Katie Gordon; 2. Dan McTeer. 125cc 3. Rocco Webb; 4. Reuben Marsh.
