‘Repair our bridges immediately’ – petition launches after urgent closures

A candidate for the Westmorland & Lonsdale seat in the upcoming General Election has launched a petition after the urgent closure of two South Cumbrian bridges.

Liberal Democrat Tim Farron is calling on the Government to provide urgent funding to repair and reopen the Brigsteer and Underbarrow bridges, near Kendal.

Westmorland and Furness Council announced today, Monday, June 10, that the bridges will be closed from Wednesday due to serious structural concerns.

Mr Farron said: “For the council to close both these bridges at the same time, with such short notice, shows how serious the risk is of these bridges collapsing.

“However there’s no doubt that these closures will lead to significant delays and disruption to the lives of local residents and businesses.

“This is yet another example of our country’s infrastructure crumbling, with our local council left to literally pick up the pieces.

“The work to fix this will likely cost a significant amount and this worries me greatly when the Conservative Government has consistently underfunded our local council and its predecessors for many years.

“The Conservative Government must provide emergency funding to get these vital arterial bridges repaired and reopened as quickly as possible.”

The petition can be found here.
