Carlisle’s new Labour MP has asked for a meeting with water regulator Ofwat.
Julie Minns has requested the meeting after it was revealed that the regulator was expanding its investigation into how companies manage sewer treatment works and networks. All 11 water firms in England and Wales are now under scrutiny, including United Utilities.
Mrs Minns has written to Ofwat, she said, after residents in around Carlisle woke to find brown water pouring from their taps.
Mrs Minns said: “The new Labour Government has been clear that we will crackdown on poor performance from the water companies.
“We won’t tolerate sewage being pumped into our rivers, lakes and seas, and I welcome Ofwat’s investigation into whether United Utilities is fulfilling its obligations to protect rivers like the Eden and the Caldew.”
