Workington Reds completed their home programme of pre-season friendlies last night with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers B.
The next time that fans have the chance to see their team in action will be in a fortnight when Lancaster City are the first visitors of the NPL Premier season.
In between, Reds go to Clitheroe on Saturday for the last friendly and then have a week to prepare for the opening League game at Guiseley.
Steven Rigg scored the only goal of an entertaining game at Borough Park in the 55th minute, showing good control to go round a defender and fire into the net.
Workington created a number of chances without being able to finish-off, which will concern manager Mark Fell, but the fact that his defence generally looked secure and gained another clean sheet delighted him.
Reds have had clean sheets against Carlisle United, Ashington and Bolton B, with a final test coming on Saturday at Clitheroe, a side that Fell rates particularly highly.
Helping collect those clean sheets in the last two games have been two defenders brought in on loan from National League Gateshead – Ben Williams and Ben Fell.
Both have joined the club on season-long loans and are half of a new group of central defenders that Fell has brought to the club with Steven Swinglehurst and Tom Wilkinson secured on deals.
Fell has only just joined Gateshead from Blyth Town where he notched over 100 appearances and helped them win the Northern League Division Two title. He also won the award for the Player of the Season in Division Two.
Williams is a graduate of the Gateshead Academy and joined the Heed after three years in the Sunderland youth system.
Mark Fell spoke to Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh after the game and you can hear his views below:
