Windscale made a great start to the Wearside League season with a 3-2 home win over Shotton on Saturday.
They followed-up in style, too, with a 5-3 mid-week win at Silksworth.
Travelling mid-week to the North East is not easy for the Cumbrians and they weren’t helped by a problem with the team coach which required 20-minute stop in Carlisle for repairs.
This meant the kick-off for the game was delayed, yet after such unsettling preparations the first 20 minutes of the game were fairly even.
Both teams attempted to assert their dominance with neither able to create any clear goal scoring opportunities.
It was the Atoms who broke the deadlock in the 27th minute. Sam Denwood won the ball in the centre circle and slipped it to Lewis Selkirk out wide. Selkirk fed Lewis Jolly who, after a couple of step overs, fired the ball home from 30 yards.
There was no further scoring in the with Windscale happy to take their 1-0 lead into the break.
Windscale doubled their lead two minutes after the restart. Will Rooke threaded the ball through to Aiden Kegg who rounded the advancing Silksworth keeper, Lewis Charlton and chipped the ball into the net over the covering defender on the goal-line.
Rhys Singleton replaced Reece Fretwell in the 50th minute following a foul tackle on the latter, but the Atoms took full advantage from the free kick.
Jolly sent in Matt Metcalf who slotted the ball beyond Charlton for the Atoms’ third goal.
Silksworth were quick to respond reducing the arears two minutes later through Liam Caffry.
Windscale were thankful to keeper Fin Stephenson in the 60th minute preventing another Silksworth goal with a great reaction save from Caffry.
Goals for the Atoms in the 69th and 72nd minutes appeared to have secured the win.
Ross Leeson, with a powerful strike from wide, while Will Rooke converted a shot from Jolly which came back off the post to give them a 5-1 lead.
The visitors took the opportunity to make a few changes with Rooke, Ray Sempill and Jolly replaced by Ryan Gray, Byron Todd and Lewis White.
Silksworth reduced the arrears with goals from Harry Fisher in the 86th minute and Keaton Randhawa in the third of the four minutes of added on time.
It was a good win for the Atoms against a team who did the League double over them last season.
Action returns to the Falcon Field on Saturday when the Atoms take on West Auckland Reserves, kick-off at 2.30pm.
