British Grand Prix winner Dan Bewley is eyeing a late surge up the Grand Prix standings after his brilliant victory at Cardiff last night.
West Cumbrian racer Bewley, from Maryport, won the meeting with Robert Lambert second to give Great Britain their first-ever one-two result in a GP.
It was the nation’s best individual result since Michael Lee and Dave Jessup finished first and second in the 1980 World Final at Gothenburg.
Victory at the Principality Stadium leaves Bewley seventh in the overall standings on 73 points, within 15 of Fredrik Lindgren who is third, with four rounds remaining.
And the next event takes place on Bewley’s home Polish track of Wroclaw on August 31.
He said: “That’s 24 points this weekend and we still have another 80 to go. That’s what’s up for grabs.
“If I got 80 points, I could still win it. Who knows? Before the weekend, I said there were 104 on offer and I got as many as I could here.
“I just want to score as many as I can and have more nights like this. I feel like I belong here, but I don’t want a wild card or anything like that.

Lambert, who spent several seasons with King’s Lynn in the UK, reached his eighth Grand Prix Final at the Principality Stadium and finished runner-up for a third time as he awaits an elusive first victory.
But the consolation was that his consistency has moved him up to second in the overall standings, 21 points behind defending champion Bartosz Zmarzlik who most unusually failed to reach the semi-finals.
Lambert said: “I was a bit worried after Friday. I couldn’t really hold on for the two practice runs. I had food poisoning on Wednesday, so I was a bit under-par and slowly trying to build my energy up over the past couple of days.
“After my second run on Friday, I was trying to think of some ways to pick up my energy levels. I had a big piece of steak last night and I think that did it, along with a good night’s sleep.”
Meanwhile another west Cumbrian top rider, Poole number one Richard Lawson has attracted a strong line-up for his Testimonial meeting at Wimborne Road on September 1.
Lawson, who currently tops the Cab Direct Championship averages, will be staging a competitive team challenge between Pirates and All Star Select sides, along with offering opportunities for youngsters to race at 250cc level.
Lawson will lead the Wessex Marine Pirates which includes his present Poole team-mates Ben Cook, Zach Cook and Sam Hagon, together with a fellow
Leicester rider, Rayn Douglas, boosted further by the inclusion of former Pirate Chris Harris with one spot to fill.
They will go into opposition against a strong looking Roger Warnes All-Stars septet, headed by Sam Masters and including Workington’s Troy Batchelor, ex-Comet Charles Wright, Anders Rowe, Josh Pickering and Lewis Kerr.
